Vendavid turns a proven vending machine into a connected product

Client: Vendavid · Sector: Vending

Vendavid had a vending solution that had already proven its worth in the field. To keep growing, the company wanted to get more out of it: new features, a screen that handles several languages so the machines can also be sold in other countries, and a cloud connection so the machines no longer operate each on their own.

Redesigning the whole system would take too long and cost too much, and the hardware already in the field would lose its value. Vendavid therefore chose a different approach: keep the existing hardware and extend the system step by step. To do that, we took over the existing firmware and modernized the entire technical chain, from the firmware and hardware integration to the cloud connection.

The result

The existing hardware stays in use. The new features come through the firmware, a new display and the cloud connection. Vendavid does not have to develop a new platform, and the investment in the current machines is preserved.

Ready for new markets. The new display supports a wide range of languages, including Slavic ones. That lets Vendavid expand into Central and Eastern Europe without much extra work.

Every machine is connected. Transactions, events and operational data now go to the Vendom cloud platform in real time, where they are processed centrally. A machine is no longer a standalone unit you only know something about when someone goes to look at it.

A stable base to build on. The firmware has been cleaned up, the critical bugs are fixed and the code has a clear structure. New features can now be added safely.

Taking over the firmware

We started with the existing embedded firmware. We analyzed the codebase, fixed the critical bugs and brought structure to it, so there was a stable base for everything that followed. Since then we have been actively maintaining the firmware.

A new display that speaks several languages

We integrated a new display into the machine, with extensive support for multiple languages, including Slavic languages. This lets Vendavid bring the same machine to market in new countries.

From standalone machine to the cloud

In vending machines, the controller and the payment systems communicate over MDB, the industry’s standard protocol. We built on that existing MDB communication. The machine now forwards transactions, events and operational data in real time to the Vendom cloud platform, where they are processed centrally.
